BWGI is excited to announce that on May 7 at 6:30 PM, BWGI staff and board members gathered at the City of Brunswick Commission Meeting to celebrate the official “Bike Month” proclamation by Mayor Cosby H. Johnson. This designation came at the request of BWGI earlier this year.

“We are so impressed with the City of Brunswick’s commitment to expanding and improving access for cyclists and pedestrians over the past few years. We’ve enjoyed working together with the Commissioners at events, and we’re excited to continue that partnership during Bike Month in May and throughout the year,” BWGI Executive Director Tavel Cowan expressed after the meeting.

WHEREAS, May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast; and
WHEREAS, National Bike Month was established in 1956 and is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling – and encourage more folks to give biking a try; and

WHEREAS, whether you bike to work or school, ride to save money or time, pump those pedals to preserve your health or the environment, or simply to explore your community, National Bike Month is an opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons we ride; and
WHEREAS, creating a bicycling-friendly community has been shown to improve citizens’ health, well-being, and quality of life, growing the economy of Brunswick, attracting tourism dollars, improving traffic safety, supporting student learning outcomes, and reducing pollution, congestion, and wear and tear on our streets and roads.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mayor Cosby H. Johnson, Mayor of the City of Brunswick along with my fellow Commissioner, do hereby proclaim the Month of May 2025 as NATIONAL BIKE MONTH in the City of Brunswick, urging all citizens to bike to work or try cycling for fun, fitness or transportation.
