On May 13, BWGI staff set off on our monthly walk, this time with A Better Glynn co-founder Shemeka Sorrells to learn how ABG is bridging the gap of civic engagement in our community. This month’s walk-and-talk leader was still riding the high from the ABG “Legacy Gala” on Saturday, May 10 where they raised funds to support new programs, roles, and a recently acquired building for the “Thrive Center,” which will serve as a community center, library, coworking space, and launch pad for advocacy initiatives.

The group gathered for a photo before setting off on the 2-mile route in downtown Brunswick.

As the walk unfolded, advocacy emerged as a central theme, aligning the missions of both ABG and BWGI. From ABG’s efforts to educate and activate Glynn County voters, to youth programs and leadership development initiatives designed to prepare locals for public service, their work complements BWGI’s focus on bike and pedestrian infrastructure and safety advocacy.

One key takeaway from the discussion was that when an area is safe and accessible for everyone – sidewalks are well-maintained and beautiful, routes are direct and safe, and the environment is welcoming – people are more inclined to choose walking, biking, or rolling over car travel. Walkable streets and “third spaces” not only help foster better health, a sense of safety and mobility, but also connection, belonging, and community pride.

Outside of the Thrive Center, the historic sidewalk was under construction as city workers made necessary repairs. The route also required a detour at G Street and Albany Avenue for the Albany Street Drainage Project currently underway. These infrastructure efforts are essential steps toward a safer, more accessible city.

The “Walk With A…” walk-and-talk series continues to spotlight areas with needed improvement, celebrate spaces built with all modes of travel in mind, and help pave the way for a more connected Brunswick through interesting conversations with local leaders and experts. At BWGI, we believe everyone deserves to move through their community safely and comfortably, no matter how they move.
