Bike Walk Golden Isles received a grant from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety totaling $58,450, the Glynn County-based non-profit organization announced this week.

The grant is funded with federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The grant year runs from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024.

“The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and our partners continue to implement programs designed to save lives and promote safe driving behaviors,” said Allen Poole, Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. “We ask everyone to help our state and nation reach the attainable goal of zero traffic deaths by driving safe speeds, always wearing a seat belt, keeping the focus on the road and not the phone, and never operating a vehicle under the influence of any substance that impairs your ability to drive.”

Funds in the grant will be used in BWGI’s education programs, safety campaigns, and to purchase bike lights and helmets, all working to improve safety and accessibility for all who walk, run, cycle and roll in the Golden Isles area.

“We are thrilled to receive a grant for a second year in a row from the Georgia Department of Highway Safety to help support BWGI’s efforts towards safer biking and walking in the Golden Isles area,” said Murray Pounds, BWGI vice chair.

During the first year of GOHS grant funding, BWGI hired its first executive director, opened an office in downtown Brunswick, participated in more than 25 local events, and produced a Glynn County bike/walk map and safety guide.
