Bike Walk Golden Isles has again received a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to support alternative transportation safety education and initiatives in the Golden Isles area.  The grant totals $96,974 for the year beginning October 1, 2024, and extending through September 30, 2025, the non-profit organization announced. The grant program is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“Part of the GOHS mission is to assist in the implementation of programs and campaigns designed to prevent crashes and eliminate traffic deaths on our roads,” said Allen Poole, Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. “GOHS will continue to develop new partnerships and continue existing ones in order to create, refine and implement safety programs designed to help our state and nation reach our goal of zero traffic deaths.”

Bike Walk Golden Isles Chair Murray Pounds stated, “This grant will finance Bike Walk Golden Isles’ education programs, safety campaigns, and much more. A portion of the funding will allow BWGI to hire a new Education Coordinator to enhance the quality and number of safety training opportunities concerning alternative transportation modes.”

“We are grateful for the support of GOHS and NHTSA as it allows us to continue to expand the free programs we’ve been offering, with the goal of improving safety for all people on the streets, sidewalks, and trails of the Golden Isles area,” said Pounds. “Through this grant, we are able to include bike light and bike helmet distribution during our safety programs. Many people in Glynn, McIntosh and Camden Counties bike, walk, run, and roll daily for transportation and fitness, and we want to make sure they can do so in a safe environment.”
