May is Bike Month, and Bike Walk Golden Isles is hosting several free, family-friendly events to share how residents can increase their safe cycling skills while enjoying the fun of biking with a group.

Smart Cycling Class

Saturday, May 4, 8-10 a.m.

Do you know all you need to know to safely ride a bike with traffic? Do you feel you know enough to teach your children how to ride cautiously and conspicuously while on their own? When you drive your car, are you confident on how to share the road with people on bikes?

The Smart Cycling program gives you the tips, tools, and techniques to confidently answer YES to each question. This class is taught by League of American Bicyclists-certified instructors and is presented by Georgia Bikes in partnership with Bike Walk Golden Isles.

The class will be held at 41514 Richmond St. in downtown Brunswick (the parking lot directly behind the Wick 3.0, 501 Gloucester St.). Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also registered for the class.

Participants should complete the online portion of the class before attending the on-bike drills session. Take the (free!) Smart Cycling Class here.

In case of poor weather, this class will be held inside the Wick 3.0, 501 Gloucester St., Brunswick (without bikes).

Celebrate Bike Month Community Ride

Saturday, May 4, 10-11 a.m.

To conclude the Smart Cycling class, join us for a family-friendly community bicycle ride through downtown and the historic areas of Brunswick in celebration of Bike Month! The ride is also completely free, but registration is requested so we know how many to expect. In case of rain, we will postpone the ride to a future date.

These events are totally FREE thanks to support from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. They are family-friendly and open to all levels. All participants must have their own bikes and helmets, and minors must be accompanied by adults. Helmets are available from BWGI if riders don’t own one.

In addition, Georgia Bikes will be holding two law enforcement bike/pedestrian safety workshops on Friday, May 3. The course covers the best practices for educating bicyclists, pedestrians, and drivers on the safe use of roadways. Attendance is worth two hours of POST credit for participating police officers.

If you are a Georgia-based officer, please join us.
