Bike Walk Golden Isles (BWGI) has again received a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) to support alternative transportation safety education and initiatives in the Golden Isles area. The grant totals $102,828.44 for the year beginning October 1, 2025, and extending through September 30, 2026, the non-profit organization announced. The grant program is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
“Part of the GOHS mission is to assist in the implementation of programs and campaigns designed to prevent crashes and eliminate traffic deaths on our roads,” said Allen Poole, Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. “GOHS will continue to develop new partnerships and continue existing ones in order to create, refine and implement safety programs designed to help our state and nation reach our goal of zero traffic deaths.”
BWGI Executive Director Tavel Cowan stated, “We are incredibly grateful to receive this grant as it allows us to continue to expand Bike Walk Golden Isles’ education programs, safety campaigns, and much more. We join GOHS and NHTSA with the combined goal of improving safety for all people on the streets, sidewalks, and trails of the Golden Isles area.”
BWGI offers free programs and activities for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers, as well as distributes the Glynn County Bike/Walk Map and Safety Guide which has been recently updated for 2025.
“Through this grant, we are able to include pedestrian lights/reflectors, bike lights, and bike helmet distributions during our safety programs,” said Cowan. “Many people in Glynn, McIntosh and Camden Counties bike, walk, run, and roll daily for transportation, fun and fitness, and we want to make sure they can do so in a safe environment.”
