BWGI was honored to receive the Highway Safety Champions Award from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) at the annual GOHS conference. This year’s theme was “Protecting Every Mile” as part of their Vision Zero Initiative to reduce fatalities and injuries for all road users.
GOHS Director Allen Poole presented the award to BWGI Executive Director Tavel Cowan, recognizing our “outstanding dedication to reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities on Georgia’s roadways.”

This recognition reflects the tremendous progress we have made over a short period of time with support from GOHS grant funding. While we celebrate these achievements, we know that even one preventable injury or fatality is too many and we are working hard to reduce the number of injuries on Golden Isles roadways and paths.
“This is an incredible honor, and we’re so thankful to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for recognizing our work,” Tavel Cowan, BWGI Executive Director said later. “We received our first grant from GOHS less than three years ago, and it’s allowed us to produce dozens of safety events, distribute bike helmets and safety gear, and create our Glynn County Bike/Walk Trail Map. This has been a great start in making the Golden Isles safer for those who bike, walk and roll.”
The Brunswick News highlighted our success in the Celebrations section of the August 27 newspaper.
