On the second Tuesday of every month, BWGI invites a guest leader to guide a 2-mile walk through Brunswick or St. Simons Island, offering a unique lens through which to experience our shared spaces.

On April 8, BWGI held our third monthly walk in this walk-and-talk series, inviting residents and tourists to “Walk With A…” Historian on St. Simons Island. Historian Allison Dupuis of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society (CGHS) led the walk on the 83rd anniversary of the German U-boat attack in 1942.

The group gathers in front of the Golden Isles Welcome Center on Beachview Dr. before setting off.

The 2.4-mile loop began at the Golden Isles Welcome Center and led to the iconic King and Prince resort, where Dupuis shared archival photos and little-known facts about the hotel’s transformation into a naval training facility and radar station during World War II. From there, the walk wound through stories of resilience, history, and the island’s wartime legacy.

Throughout the walk, BWGI staff identified areas along the route that pose challenges for pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users. These monthly walks help us spotlight the beauty, history, and people of Glynn County—all while encouraging movement, community connection, and safer, more accessible streets.

BWGI Executive Director Tavel Cowan and Greg Gates (Board Member) take up the rear of the walking party, passing beneath a live oak tree along Ocean.

Up next: On May 13, BWGI will be joined by Shemeka Sorrells, Co-Founder of A Better Glynn, for “Walk With A…” Community Advocate in downtown Brunswick.
