BWGI kicked off its new monthly walk-and-talk series with “Walk With A… Climate Scientist” on February 11. This new program will be offered at Brunswick and SSI locations to promote safe walking practices in the Golden Isles, while giving participants opportunities to learn from local experts and authorities while enjoying an informal and informative group walk.
During February’s inaugural event, Coastal Climate Adaptation Director Ashby Nix Worley shared her expertise on climate resiliency along the Georgia Coast through her work with The Nature Conservancy.

Throughout the hour-long walk, we discussed climate-friendly infrastructure, walkable neighborhoods, how the tree coverage in Downtown Brunswick reduces flooding, and the positive impact of native plants in flood-prone areas. To learn more about these topics and TNC work in our state, visit their website.
In addition, the group discussed safety and accessibility for anyone on foot or on wheels during the walk through Brunswick, including the recently completed multi-use path on the MLK corridor. Our group noted areas along the route that would benefit from updated safety infrastructure, signage, and the addition of landscaping to reduce both urban heat effect and coastal flooding impact.
Join us March 11th for “Walk With A…Muralist” at 9:30 a.m. starting at the Wick 3.0 (501 Gloucester St., Brunswick), featuring some of the vibrant murals in the city. This event is free, will cover approximately 2 miles at a casual pace, and requires no advance registration. Check out the Events page of our website for details on this and other local events.
