DESCRIPTION:Join Georgia Bikes and Bike Walk Golden Isles for a Brunswick-area Law Enforcement Bicycle Safety Workshop on Friday\, May 3. \nThe course covers the best practices for law enforcement officers to educate bicyclists\, pedestrians\, and drivers on the safe use of roadways. Also included is a review of O.C.G.A. sections pertinent to bicycles and pedestrians\, an examination of bicycle and pedestrian facility types\, an update on trends in bicycling in Georgia\, information on crash reporting\, an analysis of bicycle and pedestrian crash data\, and strategies for improving pedestrian safety. DESCRIPTION:Do you know all you need to know to safely ride a bike with traffic? Do you feel you know enough to teach your children how to ride cautiously and conspicuously while on their own? When you drive your car\, are you confident on how to share the road with people on bikes? \nThe Smart Cycling program gives you the tips\, tools\, and techniques to confidently answer YES to each question. This class is taught by League of American Bicyclists certified instructors and is presented by Georgia Bikes in partnership with Bike Walk Golden Isles. \nThe class will be held at 41514 Richmond St. in downtown Brunswick (the parking lot directly behind the Wick 3.0\, 501 Gloucester St.). Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian\, who is also registered for the class. \nParticipants should complete the online portion of the class before attending the on-bike drills session. DESCRIPTION:Join Bike Walk Golden Isles on Saturday\, Aug. 17\, at 9 a.m. to celebrate the installation of our new bike repair fix-it station at Howard Coffin Park\, Brunswick! \n \nThis incredible addition to the park was funded through a grant from Hello Goodbuy\, the Brunswick thrift shop who has returned more than $2 million to community non-profits. The City of Brunswick’s public works department installed the station. We are incredibly grateful for their support!\n  \nWe’ll hold a demonstration of how to make simple repairs\, a bike helmet giveaway/fitting\, and enjoy refreshments. Since rides are always the best way to celebrate\, we will hold a community group bike ride at 10 a.m. Bikes and helmets required for the all-paces family-friendly ride. DESCRIPTION:This one is the biggest challenge of the year on our calendar. We invite you to join us for our yearly 100-mile ride. We’ve got a great down-and-back route that goes from Kingsland to Hortense\, GA\, and back.\nWe strongly encourage you to train leading up to this with several (50+) rides. This is self-supported. Please bring a quick calorie snack for every hour of riding (approximately 8 hours)\, at least two water bottles and some electrolyte powders.\nHelmets required. Here is what you need to know: \nEarly packet pickup\n Friday\, 1 November 2024\, 3-7 PM \n St. Marys Welcome Center\, 400 Osborne St. in St. Marys\, GA. \nEvent Day\n Saturday\, 2 November 2024\n Howard Gilman Memorial Waterfront Park on St. Marys Street West\n Do not park in the Cumberland Ferry lot across from the park\n Street parking is available throughout the downtown area\n Packet pickup begins at 6:30 AM at the park gazebo\n Riders stage by 7:30 for the safety briefing. Sunrise is 7:45\, and we will start at safe light!\n Each route starts separately at 2-minute intervals\, beginning with the century riders\, then the 62\, 40\, 30\, and 10-mile.\n Routes are color-coded on your bib\, wristband\, and directional signs\n Yellow = Century\n Red = 62 mi\n Blue = 40 mile\n Green = 30 mile\n Light blue = 10 mile\n Directional signs are posted along the routes; there are NO markings on the street.\n Black arrows indicate all routes follow the same path\n Colored arrows indicate specific routes split from the pack\n Know your color and follow the arrows\n Support and Gear (SAG) vehicles will be patrolling the entire course\n If you need help\, move out of the roadway and a SAG will stop to check on you.\n Contact phone numbers are located on your cue sheet\n On the Hwy 17 stretch for 62 & 100-mile\, SAG may follow riders closely to calm local traffic.\n Rest stops are clearly labeled and stocked with water and individually wrapped snacks\n Restroom facilities are available\n Final notes about the routes\n When traveling on Spur 40 (Charlie Smith Sr Hwy)\, the right lane past the submarine photo op becomes a TURN ONLY lane into the base.  Please merge left to continue straight through the light.\n 40\, 62\, and 100 travel along Laurel Island Parkway\, which has a new multi-purpose trail on the north side.  Please take advantage of this new addition to our local trail system! \n Century Riders please note: The rest stop in Woodbine at the Satilla River (mile 44) is a must!  Restroom facilities are limited beyond this stop\, until you return to the park on the way back (mile 77).\n Century riders must arrive at the Woodbine rest stop (mile 44) by noon to avoid being turned back to complete a shorter ride.\n\nAfter the ride\n Join us at the park for the after-ride chili meal with all the fixings.\n For the sake of social distancing\, the chili area will be cordoned off for limited entrance. Please be patient as you wait your turn to enter.\n Our volunteers will be serving the chili\, and all the fixings are individually packaged for grab and go. \n Century riders can pick up their medals at the chili area.

This staggering number has become a cry for advocates trying to call attention to suicide among veterans\, especially U.S. combat-injured veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. \nMany injured U.S. combat-injured veterans struggle with physical disabilities\, including loss of limbs and mental health issues such as Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Fairways for Freedom® provides the opportunity for reintegration back into society through many holistic initiatives\, including the game of golf. \nThis November 9th\, Fairways for Freedom® is partnering with SSI VFW Post 4092 to host the Veterans Day 5K Beach Race/1 Mile Walk.
