SUMMARY:"Walk (or bike) With A..." Tour Guide
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, April 15th\, Road Scholars Linda Olsen and Fred Collins will share local SSI history during this walk and bike event starting at Saint Simons Island Public Library at 2:50 PM for a short introduction. The walk and ride will begin promptly at 3 PM. \nLinda Olsen will guide the walking portion of this event. \nTo participate in the bike ride\, attendees must provide their own bicycle and bike helmet (both required) to go on the 6-mile out-and-back bike ride with Fred Collins\, with a stop or two along the way to talk about local SSI history. \nThis casual walk-and-talk series allows Golden Isles residents and visitors to engage with interesting leaders and impactful voices in our community. Our walk leaders typically take a Q & A-style approach\, though occasionally provide a short-form lecture along the way. There is a pedestrian safety and Build-A-Better-Block element to this series: we make observations about accessibility along the route\, noting the areas in need of improvement and the areas the city or county has done well.

SUMMARY:"Walk With A..." Historian
DESCRIPTION:This month\, come along for a “Walk With A…” Historian. Allison Dupuis is the Historian at the Coastal Georgia Historical Society\, which oversees the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum and the World War II Home Front Museum. As the Historian at CGHS and previously as the Museum Educator at Mosaic\, Jekyll Island Museum\, she has been learning\, researching\, writing\, and speaking about the Golden Isles’ fascinating history for more than four years. Her recent presentation topics include the history of the F.J. Torras Causeway and T.L. Huston\, the builder and original resident of the Huston House on Butler Island. \nWe will set off from the Golden Isles Welcome Center (529 Beachview Dr.\, SSI) on Tuesday\, April 8th at 9:30 AM. Allison will lead us along a 2.2 mile out-and-back walk to King and Prince on the anniversary of the U-Boat Attack on Saint Simons Island. This walk-and-talk experience will be filled with interesting facts about local WWII history. Be prepared to learn something new! \nBWGI created this program to connect different members of the Golden Isles community while assessing the safety\, walk- and bikeability of the routes we take. Throughout our journey\, join BWGI staff as we point out areas of concern and acknowledge the spaces that have been done well. Some of the paths we take on these excursions are rough\, have missing or broken sidewalks\, and more. Watch where you step! \nAs always\, come prepared for southeast Georgia weather. Wear sunscreen\, sturdy walking shoes and a hat\, and bring water for this outdoor excursion. \n

SUMMARY:"Walk With A..." Muralist
DESCRIPTION:Bike Walk Golden Isles is hosting the second excursion for our monthly walk-and-talk program\, and it’s happening next week! This month\, come along for a “Walk With A…” Muralist. Prolific artist Roderrick Davis is leading us along a ~2-mile mural walk through downtown Brunswick. Many of the murals along our planned route were done as part of The Brunswick Mural Project by Glynn Visual Arts\, one was part of the “Honoring The Past and Building The Future” project\, and a few historic works as well. \nThere are more incredible murals outside the scope of our route length that are well worth seeing. More information about local murals will be available in an upcoming newsletter\, stay tuned! \nAs always\, come prepared for southeast Georgia weather. Wear your sturdy walking shoes and a hat\, and don’t forget to bring water and sunscreen for this outdoor excursion. We will set off from the Wick 3.0 (501 Gloucester St.) on Tuesday\, March 11th at 9:30 AM for this fun and informative activity! \n \n
